Frank JANCA :

Oil : the art of figure and portrait painting from life - May 17 - 22, 2009

Oil : the impressionist landscape according to Sorolla
- June 14 - 19, 2009

Frank Janca is an artist whose work draws upon his highly developed personal sensitivity toward nature and from his study of the classical tradition of Old Masters. The artist's approach to his subject, acquired from over thirty years of painting, is marked by a careful study, acute observation and a particular kind of passion for the physicality of paint and the play of light that animates and illuminates his landscapes, still lifes and portraits. The artist's appreciation for the use of light and shadow found in the works of Velasquez and other Baroque masters of the 17th century have led him to focus on similar concerns in his own work. "Velasquez composed the light so beautifully that he makes you see more colors than he's actually put down" Janca explains. "Designing the light in the painting is my first concern." This is really apparent in his still lifes in which objects are enveloped in a warm luminosity that brings out the contrasting surfaces, forms and texture of the vases, teapots, figurines, fruits and flowers that are sensitively arranged for the eye to slowly play across the spaces they inhabit.

In this workshop we will follow the tradition of the golden age illustrated by Rubens, Velasquez and Titian. We will focus on how to think of the model in terms of pose and structure by integrating the principles of anatomy and composition, creating an image having substance and depth. We will also look further into the techniques of the great masters like painting mediums, glazing and varnishing which are subjects of great importance. We will see that creating an image with dimension and depth is greatly facilitated if we approach reality with a visual idea or concept such as, for example the movement of light describing the form, rather than just copying laboriously what is in front of us. The concept makes it possible to see the model in this way and to express it using the principles of the great masters like contrast in temperature of color between lights and darks, opaque lights and transparent shadows, understanding and use of half-tones with their splendid effects, composition considering model and space asa whole and using large geometrical shapes to get an efficient placement, paint quality combining thick layers and glazing, understanding and use of anatomy, perspective and light to push the painting to its optimal quality, understanding color and its use to create light. Using these principles and keeping in mind the concept from the beginning to the end makes it possible and easy to know at every moment where we are and where we need to go.

Born in Maryland in 1953, he studied in the School of Visual Arts of New York City and later at the Art Students League of the same city. He lives in Santa Fe, NM and spends each year several months in France in order to paint the landscapes of southern France. He took part in many exhibitions in particular in the Museum of Brooklyn and in Japan and Rome. He was the only painter invited to the exhibition "Splendours of Versailles" and a retrospective of his work took place at the Museum of Arts in Biloxi, Mississippi. His work is published by the London editor Rosenstiel. In France he had a dozen personal and group shows in Lyon, Annonay, Alba-la-Romaine, Aubenas and St-Paul-Trois-Châteaux. He taught painting in New York City and organized painting workshops in France, California and New York State.
