Georges Briata learned from Gromaire and Gustave Corlin who studied with Matisse and Rouault, which accounts for his remarkable control of drawing and a perfect intelligence of shapes and color. Strength and intensity of colors characterize the paintings of this artist whose works are filled with emotion. The artist poses each stroke as a composer of music would do with musical notes. His paintings appear to be less figurative than one would think at first sight. They show shapes of refinement, often on the threshold of stylization, in which harmony and tenderness are fully expressed.

Working from a live model will help us get familiar with drawing, especially gesture drawing with a continuous line. This approach asssures a good movement and personality because it makes it possible to seize the action while keeping an eye on the model. The study of color will be accomplished, according to the sensitivity of each student, with subjects such as landscapes, still life or a model. After a close examination of the subject we will study the organization of the surface and propose a series of sketches. Color is not a question of quantity like value but of choice and we can compare color with music. In music there are only seven notes but all depends on their placement. The same applies to painting : in order to get an overall harmony of colors, ratios of colors are more important than colors considered individually.

Briata studied first at the École des Beaux-Arts of Marseille his birthplace. Later he studied with Gromaire at the École Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs of Paris before entering the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts of Paris. In 1959 he was appointed professor at the École des Beaux-Arts of Marseille where he taught "Drawing, color and composition".
