Michel BELLIONMichel BELLIONHe passionately loves sea and land but has also a great affinity for human nature noticeable in his warm and intimate style. This human dimension imparts his paintings with a feeling of well-being. "Art is about proportions but what counts is our feeling" likes to say Michel Bellion, quoting Max Jacob. My desire to paint always starts the same way : first, standing in front of a subject, there is an almost impalpable emotion. Then, suddenly, I get caught by the beauty and charm of the spot and, finally, resisting no longer, the need to put it down in my sketch book becomes paramount.

I would like to share with you the many pleasures that offers painting on the spot with gouache. You can use this flexible material in various ways : you can make impastos, use it diluted like watercolor and paint over your work several times. According to the support you are painting on, whether blank or coloured paper, paperboard or wood, you will get different results but, in all cases, the colors will be of an exceptional quality. I will show you the art of travel sketches which primarily consists in collecting in a fast an accurate way the subject, using the white of the paper to obtain infinite and subtle harmonies and memorizing colors in order to transcribe them later if necessary.

Born in Brest in 1946, Michel Bellion is attracted by the sea and the art of drawing since the age of 7. He received his art education in the École des Beaux-Arts in Brest and the École Nationale Supérieure des Métiers d'Arts in Paris. Appointed official painter of the Navy, he embarked since 1992 five times on ships of the Navy, travelling from Norway to the Cerulean Islands and from Australia to Canada, sketching and painting. In 2003 he embarks with the famous author and sailor Olivier de Kersauzon on board of his 30 meters long trimaran for an artistic tour around Brittany. The artist paints on the spot what the sailor describes in his own poetic way, an anthology that was shown in 2005 at the Musée National de la Marine in Paris and Brest and which became the subject of a book. Salons : Salon d'Automne, Salon du Dessin et de la Peinture à l'Eau, salons of the Musée National de la Marine in Paris, Brest and Toulon. He exhibits in France, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Réunion, Nouvelle-Calédonie and was rewarded with many prizes. Galeries in France : Laetitia in Brie-Comte-Robert, du Château in Auray, Sillage in Sauzon, les Artistes et la Mer in Saint-Malo. Collections : Musée de la Marine in Paris, ships of the Navy : Surcouf, Jeanne-d'Arc, Guéprate, Georges-Leygues. Bibliography : "Bretagne vue de la Mer" 2005 with Olivier de Kersauson (Le Cherche-Midi), "Le pays des Abers" 2005 (Le Télégramme), illustration of books dedicated to the official painters of the Navy.
